Detoxification, in which toxic build-up within the body is cleared out to provide a vitally nourishing environment for the body’s
cells and defensive mechanisms to thrive is not new. This holistic approach to attaining and maintaining vibrant health was
advanced by principal contributors such as Dr. Harvey Kellogg, Dr. Bernard Jensen, Dr. Norman Walker and V.E. Irons. They utilized
the two-pronged approach of:
1. Fasting from regular food to rest the body from the very taxing work of digestion, thus focusing its
vital energies on casting off accumulated toxic buildup,
2. Using colon irrigations (i.e. enemas, colemas, or colonics) to help the
colon cast off layers of encrusted accumulation.
As demonstrated by many years of extensive documented results (e.g. seePioneers or Testimonials), this is still the most effective means of detoxifying the body. The excellent 7-day home cleansing
program and corresponding Vit-Ra-Tox cleansers and supplements (see Supplements) promoted by V.E. Irons is representative of this
approach. To improve elimination and the dislodging of encrusted material impacted along the colon walls, the Irons approach
includes the use of a psyllium powder cleanser (seed and husks) and a suspended bentonite clay adsorbent that, unlike stimulant laxatives,
is extremely safe for repeated daily use. The CustomCleanseTM program incorporates the Irons program as the first
of three optional cleansing regimens. However, as discussed in a V.E. Irons interview (Sam Biser, The Healthview Newsletter,
1, 1983) in which Irons talked about eating roughage (i.e. salad, vegetables, etc.) absent any protein or starches, as a possible
alternative to the colon irrigation component of his 7-day cleansing program, a second of the three regimens does not require colon
irrigations. Roughage, timed (relative to the psyllium cleanser drinks) to facilitate maximum loosening of encrusted materials
is used instead. Finally, the fact that fruit and vegetable juices not only require very little work to digest, but can also
aid elimination, was used to obtain an additional modification of the V.E. Iron’s standard program to include fruit and fresh raw
juices.
We note that although optional regimens are provided that allow fruit, juices, and/or salads, the fasting in the standard V.E. Irons program is not bad because nutritional supplements and cleansing drinks are consumed throughout the day during the fast. Though not a full feeling, these help provide the stomach with a non-empty feeling. The colon irrigations of the standard program are also not a big deal (the biggest chore is cleaning up). Like anything else, it just requires a little familiarity with the procedure.
